The Balkan Chapter: Harmony on the Coast
This project marks a significant milestone for The Old Oak as we bring our signature landscape philosophy to the Bulgarian coast. Situated between the foothills of the Balkan Mountains and the Black Sea, the site presented a unique opportunity to work with Mediterranean flora and traditional Bulgarian stone. The design focuses on creating a seamless transition from the modern villa architecture to the rugged beauty of the surrounding terrain.
We prioritized “living spaces” outdoors, including a panoramic terrace and a hidden seating area protected from the coastal winds. The landscape is structured using dry-stack stone walls—a nod to local craftsmanship—which serve both as functional retaining elements and as a timeless aesthetic backdrop for the garden.
Materials and Sustainability
The plant palette was carefully selected to thrive in the local microclimate, featuring a mix of aromatic herbs, ancient olive trees, and ornamental grasses that require minimal irrigation. By using locally sourced granite and reclaimed wood for the decking, we ensured that the garden feels like a natural extension of the landscape rather than an artificial addition.
This garden is built to endure, reflecting the resilience of the Old Oak itself. It is a space that celebrates the sun, the sea breeze, and the quiet strength of natural materials, providing the homeowners with a private sanctuary that will only grow more beautiful with the passing seasons.
